Is Happy the New Black?

I love learning new ways to feel good:)  I used to study these things quietly, privately…it seemed to me that others thought my interest was a bit odd… something you don’t talk about publicly.

Is happy the new black?

Now, it seems that “how to be happier” is everywhere.  And here’s the irony: it dawned on me today that now when I read about happiness, I sometimes think, “Am I happy enough?  Are my kids happy enough?  Are my clients happy enough?  Am I doing enough of the right things to make us as happy as we should be?”

Suddenly, I get it.  I see why people can feel worse when they see and hear all this happy talk.  Happy can sometimes be a new status symbol: are you as good at being happy as you should be?  As he is?

In my best moments, I don’t care to compare, I just find a way to feel better now.  It turns out, I know how to be really happy– but when I take a “society” view of it, I may dismiss my happy moments as frivolous and not getting me somewhere important… and (deep voice here) SERIOUS.

One way I’ve gotten out of the happy status trap is to simply play— for the fun of it, without worrying about success, failure, or my happiness ranking.  Fun in failing, fun in flailing:  There’s no comparison.
